Workchoice Day at Trade Me in Auckland

On Tuesday we welcomed a keen bunch of students to our Auckland-based office for Workchoice Day, organised by the Workchoice Trust. The aim of the trust is to equip school leavers with the tools to make an informed choice about their future.

Students from Auckland Girls' Grammar and Howick College spent the day listening, learning and asking heaps of questions about what we do and how we do it. Some of our team gave them the low-down on their personal journeys, and how they eventually landed here at Trade Me.

You can see photos of their time here by checking out our Trade Me Jobs Facebook page.

Next week our Wellington office are welcoming another bunch of hungry students from local schools. If you'd like to know more about Workchoice Day, check out their website.

Categories changed: Farming

We’re always looking for ways to improve how items are categorised on Trade Me, to better connect buyers and sellers in our marketplace.

As part of that work, we have made a number of changes to the Farming category to better reflect the range of products available. We’ve added a number of new categories and have taken the opportunity to update some of the category labels. In particular, we’ve brought in new categories for:

- Dairy and milking equipment
- Fertilising & pest control
- Hay making
- Livestock health & management
- Pasture & lawn maintenance
- Planting
- Soil cultivation
- Trailers & transportation

These changes are now live on Trade Me.

Download a category overview of how the Farming category has been rearranged.

We want to continually improve the browsing experience on Trade Me and there are several other category improvements in the pipeline. Please keep an eye out for any changes that may affect you as a seller. We’ll keep you updated on the major changes via our Announcements page.

You may have noticed Kevin the Kiwi sporting a pink shirt today – he’s celebrating Pink Shirt Day, an annual event celebrated throughout New Zealand and around the world.
Its goal is to reduce bullying by celebrating diversity and promoting the development of positive social relationships. For more about Pink Shirt Day, check out the website.

Our staffers here at Trade Me are getting involved too by donning their pink shirts today; keep an eye out on our Facebook page for a picture. If you’d like to share a pic of you and your friends or colleagues wearing your pink shirts, feel free to post it on our Facebook page.

Update: Qualifying for Pay Now

Good news - members with 10 feedback or more are now able to accept payment for sold items using Pay Now. Previously, you needed 50 or more feedback to use this service.

We’re keen for more sellers to experience the benefits of Pay Now, so we've reduced the required feedback rating for members to register. You’ll still need to be Address Verified and have a New Zealand bank account to use Pay Now. If you have any questions about this, drop our customer service team a line.

Trade Me Motors pricing has changed

We’ve made some changes to listing, success and promotional fees for selling vehicles on Trade Me. This includes cars, motorbikes, boats and other vehicles such as aircraft, buses, caravans & motorhomes, earthmoving machinery, horse floats, specialist cars, tractors, trailers, trucks and wrecked cars.

If you are selling a vehicle via a classified, the listing fee range has increased from the current fee range of $39-$59, to $39-$69. The listing fee depends on the asking price and pricing changes are as set out below:

- $39 for an asking price under $1,500 (was $39 for under $1,000 asking price)
- $59 for an asking price between $1,500-$10,000 (was $49 for $1,000-$10,000 asking price)
- $69 for an asking price above $10,000 (was $59 for over $10,000 asking price)

Please note that if the asking price is increased, this may increase your listing fee. There is no success fee for classified listings.

If you are selling a vehicle via auction, the success fee will still be charged based on 1.95% of the sale price (the maximum success fee has increased from $39 to $49). The listing fee remains at $39.

Fees for promotions have also changed as follows:

- Bold title, was $5, now $9
New reference numbers for Trade Me transactions

When you buy or sell an item on Trade Me, we supply a reference number to include while completing the transaction (e.g., when paying by bank deposit). This reference number used to be the same as the listing number of the item, but it is now a unique number beginning with 'P'.

Here are the answers to some of the most common questions we've received:

What is the reference number?
The reference number is used to identify each transaction between a buyer and seller on Trade Me.

I’m a buyer. Where is the reference number?
You will see a reference number on each purchase under the Won tab within My Trade Me, and in any emails you receive regarding a specific transaction.

I’m a seller. Where is the reference number?
You will see a reference number on each sale within the Sold tab on your My Trade Me page, and in any emails you receive regarding a specific transaction.

How can I match listing numbers with purchase reference numbers?
For sellers who want to match up a listing number with a purchase reference number, go to Sold items in My Trade Me. Put the listing number in the left-hand 'Keywords' box, hit 'Search' and it will bring up the listing with the purchase reference number. We’ve put together some screenshots and further help for you here.

Why did you change to this new number?
With the introduction of multiple quantity listings this week, sellers can now make more than one sale from a listing. Each of these sales needs its own unique reference number, even though the listing number stays the same.

Example: I’m selling 20 rubber duckies through my listing, and the listing number is 123456789. Tom, Diana and Hemi each buy a ducky, and each gets a unique P number to reference their transaction e.g. Tom gets P1114567, Diana gets P2224567, and Hemi gets P3334567.

But what if I’m only selling one item?
The reference number is used to identify each transaction between a seller and a buyer, so your sale will still generate a unique number. We wanted to provide buyers with a universal number, rather than having one system for multiple-quantity listings and one for single-item listings.

Where can I get more information?
Check out the announcement we made on Tuesday, or our Help section on multiple-quantity listings.
