Jesus Christ Pita Bread
-
Reserve met
- Closed: Thu 8 Jan 2009, 12:12 pm
- Listing #: 195642530
Hungry, one morning last week, I decided to heat up some pita bread. I broke it into little bits and left it in the oven for about two and a half minutes.
After the pieces began to blacken I took them out. Oddly enough one piece even looked like the "face" of Jesus. I was tempted to eat it but for some reason I didn't.
Instead, I left it in the pantry until today, when I finally decided that I might as well auction it off.
I guess what you all want to know is whether it's a coincidence or real apparition. I'm not really sure. All the same, whether you're a Christian or just curious, happy bidding!

Questions and answers
Given that there are no physical descriptions of Jesus in the historical books, or any artistic work, how did you determine what the "face" of Jesus looks like?

Good point. This pita bread does however show a profound likeness to many Byzantine mosaics and Catholic oil paintings of Jesus.
12:27 pm, Fri 2 Jan
Thank you, but I don't need luck. I pray to the pita bread.
12:28 pm, Fri 2 Jan
Hmmm. Not sure it's His eyes (not sure what that third eye down the left cheek is doing though). I can introduce you to the real Jesus if you'd like. Free of charge.

I'll take a rain check on that offer. Although it's nice to know that you're ready to spread the word.
12:30 pm, Fri 2 Jan
Logically, I have to try to be careful that it doesn't break during transport which will require lots of bubble wrap, foam and packaging.
All the same, I'll make sure that it's no more than $8.
12:32 pm, Fri 2 Jan
I've run a few tests but it was impossible to pick up any traces of divinity.
12:33 pm, Fri 2 Jan
Can you confirm the origin of the bread as Pita bread, otherwise known as Turkish bread was originally from Turkey where 99% of the population are Muslim. If it is a piece of Jesus bread its most likely not Pita.

I'm unsure where it was actually baked, however, you'll find that pita bread is not just eaten in Turkey but also in Israel - Jesus' birthplace.
12:37 pm, Fri 2 Jan
Would you be prepared to swap it for a sack of onions that looks like Madonna?

Tempting, but no.
12:38 pm, Fri 2 Jan
Hmmm, interesting. Maybe if it was on a candy cane.
12:39 pm, Fri 2 Jan
I see your point. But I'm sure it's still Jesus.
12:41 pm, Fri 2 Jan
Trust me, it's the right way up. Any other way and it just looks like burnt pita bread.
12:42 pm, Fri 2 Jan
It's about 4cm x 3.5cm.
12:42 pm, Fri 2 Jan
Can you confirm that this is actually the face of Jesus? I would be concerned that it's actually the face of someone else. How do I know you're not trying to pull one over on us?

I couldn't lie to the face of Jesus.
12:44 pm, Fri 2 Jan
That's a toughie. I'm not sure so I wouldn't eat it if you're allergic to gluten.
12:46 pm, Fri 2 Jan
It's on pita bread, not a Christmas cookie.
12:46 pm, Fri 2 Jan
I'd say he's about to be crucified so theological estimates would suggest around 30.
12:47 pm, Fri 2 Jan
If you want to see it, you will.
12:48 pm, Fri 2 Jan
Believe me, it's Jesus.
12:48 pm, Fri 2 Jan
Sorry. Satan pita bread always burns up in the oven.
12:49 pm, Fri 2 Jan

It's whatever prophet you choose but I still think it's Jesus. There's no staff, so it can't be Moses.
12:53 pm, Fri 2 Jan
Judas doesn't appear in pita bread. He feels too guilty.
12:53 pm, Fri 2 Jan
I see your point. I'm still adamant it's Jesus.
12:55 pm, Fri 2 Jan
Look carefully at the creases and the holes and Jesus will appear.
12:55 pm, Fri 2 Jan
I will donate a portion to a non-profit organisation. Probably SPCA - a personal favourite - but let me know what you think.

Keep your pants on "mate". If you want to believe some forum, that's your choice. As for the percentage, I'll let you know, once I know the final price. "Free Jumbo" campaign run by S.A.F.E. NZ's own charity that cares for all animals. Check out safe.org.nz "Free Jumbo". Surely the fact that people are giving YOU suggestions to donate the profits from this item to various charities etc when its your "kinda looks like Jesus thing" irritates you - rules 1 and 2 should apply; LOOK AFTER #1 and GREED IS GOOD. Perhaps someone should start a facebook group dedicated to the miracle that is Jesus pita. That way it would get even wider coverage and perhaps in turn generate more money for the auction thus a larger amount of money will eventually go to help saving poor animals from abuse. Pity about all the miserable people sharing their negativity, but i see you are holding your own very well Tom. Keep in up. I understand the urge to sponsor charities such as the SPCA who do a pretty good job of protecting animals in this country (not counting the millions we kill for food that is), so here's a thought, HARE KRISHNA Food for Life is a fantastic charity, feeding millions and millions of hungry HUMANS all over the planet. I read somewhere that they've served well over 100 million hot tasty meals to date and that figure is climbing rapidly. What do the punters think??

I myself once tried to auction a sliver of the True Cross, but it got withdrawn not 10 minutes in.A lie of course, A rather funny one I thought, but i was wrong. You, on the other hand have been blessed with the True Image In Thine Very Own Oven! An obvious reward for your genuine good nature, and friendly intelligence. You are even still being kind to the 5% stupid, angry people writing comments, and so deserve every penny raised. If you must donate, why not buy a cheap dishevelled cat.

Apparently theres a "Breads of the World" competition somewhere... I was told the categories are Corn Bread, White Bread, Brown Bread, Cooked Bread (Toast), Rewena Bread (to be "culturally sensitive" LOL), Wholemeal Bread, In Bred, Half Bred (thems 2 for them redneck folks, no discrimination ya know) and Pita Bread - factoring in the global entertainment factor this auction is providing, I'd suspect you are up for a Category Win !!

I am somewhat surprised by your response. To deny the very existence of Jesus is ignorant because there are countless historical records that point to his presence 2000 years ago. Perhaps, you mean to deny his claim to divinity, instead, which is something I agree with you on.

Firstly, thanks for your suggestion. Unfortunately, I do hold a number of reservations about Amnesty International. Let me start by saying that I think pacifism is a wonderful thing, but let's remember that it took a full-scale war to topple Saddam Hussein, not some pretty cursive letter writing. At the end of the day, licking stamps simply won't make peace. In that way, you could say that Amnesty International is a bit like the U.N. - too inactive. Or, as I like to say; all logo and no go-go!

There are plenty of things to do with it. I've thought of ten already: (1) An edible coaster. (2) A necklace - just add string. (3) A finger puppet - just add finger. (4) A frisbee. (5) A Christmas tree ornament. (6) A snack. (7) A pencil holder - ram them in the eyes. (8) An action figure. (9) A Halloween mask for a midget. (10) If you're really pathetic - a friend.
4:20 pm, Tue 6 Jan

Hmm. 1st you gave 10 ideas to "nusac" about what one could do with this "Jesus" pita bread. None have any religious bearing at all. So, you've openly admitted that this "Jesus" pita bread is basically, worthless. 2nd, you've sided with "smeatz77" that Jesus is in fact "just a man" making your "Jesus" pita bread worthless. The difference between Jesus and people like smeatz77 is that Jesus is famous all over the world and has been for 2,000 years. smeatz77 might be lucky to get 15 secs. Or not.

Fame? That's your argument? Britney Spears is probably the most famous person around today and she's about as much use to the world as an AIDS pandemic. For someone who is so staunch a supporter of "our Lord" I'm surprised that your argument for Jesus' greatness resides on something so trivial. Furthermore, smeatz77's disbelief in Jesus does not warrant an attack on him - we're all entitled to our own beliefs.

Hell, if he wasn't famous, what value would your pathetic pita bread have?? You're making use of HIS fame (as an empowered personality) to bluff bidders into buying a burnt piece of toast. It's a bit hard to believe that you're only 15+...I thought if you're not 60+, you could be in the 30(s)...judging from your humourous smart answers. Hmmm...what will you be like when you turn 30 then? Anyway, I'll do my bit to help you to make 100000 viewers by sending out to my group email, hopefully my friends will log on to see such an entertaining auction.

It's kinda brown and creased. You'll have a hard time seeing it though, because I've blu-tacked the pita bread to a piece of cardboard.

I guess that makes you a missionary.

Next week, can you arrange a Yoda Pita Bread auction? That way you will get exposure across the Universe (think "big") for your auction as everyone on Earth (and not, including the Imperial Army, the Resistance, most aliens and Grand Supreme Ruler Qzarphwarknirptx the 9th on Planet D-42X-Xebor-X) knows Yoda - compared to him, Jesus was an amateur in the entertainment side of things - cash in on that!

I’ve enjoyed your wonderful humour and witty responses. It may interest you to know that Jesus Christ’s face appeared miraculously on a hard slab of granite rock in Dec 1995, to a wheat-farmer in Perth Australia. We live in an age of miracles! Check out this amazing website and you’ll see at number 8 the face of Christ on the rock – incredibly similar to yours on the Pita Bread – wow!! http://www.share-international.org/background/miracles/MI_other.htm

Yah, I'm disappointed that the bid has dropped to $215. Come on people, keep the bid going!!! Tom may need to spend some money on massage for sitting long hours to answer all questions. Religion is just a sensitive topic that can get a lot of people all riled up. Thankfully, most Kiwis have a sense of humour and don't take this auction like a stake up the butt.
3:52 pm, Wed 7 Jan
The only reason religion remains a sensitive topic is because people make it that way. People who have tried to scare away potential bids have only fueled that centuries old fire.
rough1 (26

Sadly, religion's importance isn't about to change. Even today, brutal wars are waged merely on a difference of faith, something which will likely continue in the future.

Steve is obviously very immature. Tom, Perhaps you have threatened his manhood by being an enterprising young adult making a bit of money for yourself and a charity whilst keeping good humor regardless of the comments you recieve. At 15 I would hardly class you as a child. Steve, your discrimnation against young peoples' ability and right to run an auction highly disappoints me. You should be ashamed of yourself, judging someone you know nothing about on the basis of his age alone.

Are you sure it's not, in fact, a headless one armed, legless Spartan torso from the film 300? This would explain the injury to the lower left?

300 - that film had more intentional historical inaccuracies than Bill Clinton's memoirs.

Thanks for keeping me and thousands of others amused for the past few days, I will now have to actually go and do some work for a change. Good luck for the future, maybe you should get Murray from Flight of the Conchords as your manager.

$20 for meat? With today's prices, you'll have to settle with a chicken nugget.

Your mum and dad must be so proud to have such a bright cookie , as a parent of a 15yr old I know you guys have all the answers but you are brilliant . It's so nice to see that teenagers have a great sense of humor and use it to raise funds for a worthy cause.
Good Luck for the future with your talent you'll go far.

Given that there are no physical descriptions of Jesus in the historical books, or any artistic work, how did you determine what the "face" of Jesus looks like?
Good point. This pita bread does however show a profound likeness to many Byzantine mosaics and Catholic oil paintings of Jesus.
