if you can see the image of the Virgin Mary, (i can sort of) perhaps it is a gift from God and you shouldn't sell it for profit or charity, but rather keep it as a reminder of the small miracles that happen in this world. Doesn't everything happen for a reason?

Good on you for selling! So much controversy of a shape that to some resembles a religious figure. I don't think you'd get many people excited if somebody found a pebble with the shape of a tooth brush or a hot-dog.
Do what ever you want with the money, don't feel pressured just because to some it resembles a religious figure and you have to give the money to charity just because it might say so in the ten commandments. If you believe in that then fine, if you don't also fine!

WOW you must have an amazing camera if this pebble is only 1cm big.....it has so much detail. I don't know about all this religious stuff and don't really know if I think it is anything but get what you can for it. If people are silly or desperate enough to pay this much money for a 1cm pebble then more the fools them. GOOD LUCK and here's hoping you get the money you want.

Cool, my first reaction wasn't very kind but as an antique dealer I'm always aware that everything is only worth the money someone is willing to pay. Lets face it Clarice Cliff is badly painted rubbish first sold in Woolworths but people are prepared to pay massive sums for it. In my humble opinion you'd make a lot more money from the sale of this item by listing it on eBay. Much bigger and wealthier audience. As for the money you get for it, I once heard the motto: Give some, Spend some, Put some away. After all, $70k isn't THAT much these days is it? By "Authentic" do you mean an authentic pebble (as a geology department could verify), or do you mean an authentic image of the so-called 'virgin mary' (VM). Surely you need the theology department to verify that it is what you say it is. If I buy it and it is shown not to be a natural pattern resembling a walrus, and nothing to do with the (VM) would you be prepared to refund the money plus costs of verification.

Pls don't feel you have to reply to this, but I'd like to say that while I personally wouldn't bid on this, I'm stunned at the number of people who have "suggested" that you give the $ to charity. I wonder if this is because of its religious link, but regardless, I say tell them to butt out. If someone pays you thousands for this knowing what they are buying, then good for you! There is no known difinitive picture of Mary. The clothing we are familiar with comes from the imagination of mainly Renaisance painters. We dont know if she had short or long hair, was tall, short, thin or fat. At best you can claim a faint resemblance to a familiar painting. If it's just a rock with an impurity in it, it's worthless; one of billions. It if it's a genuine image - the work of God - it's priceless. Therefore whichever way one chooses to see it, the price is ridiculous. On the contrary, anything and everything's worth what some fool's willing to pay (which we've yet to witness here) and regardless, by the time you've answered all these questions you'll have earned at least some of your money (to invest in spelling lessons? I guess you could say it looks like the Virgin Mary but she certainly has put on a lot of weight since she was last seen, must have gone on an eating binge after Joseph left her when he found out she had cheated on him with God. She also looks like she's wearing a medal. Perhaps she changed her name and became an Olympic athlete later in life. A lesson in the definition of value - this item is worth exactly what the highest bidder thinks it is, to them. Now granted I personally think that money might be better used spent on psychological testing... but at the end of the day, people can spend their money on whatever they want right? People find it perfectly alright to spend tens of thousands of dollars on their cars (hell, sometimes even just the wheels) and I doubt any of the profit there goes to charity. I'm not a religious nut, and I'm not trying to be funny. But you have to wonder whether what your doing is a sin against God, and since you don't believe in God, you must find some truth in Karma. I wouldn't toy with selling such an item for financial gain. There may be some catch that comes later in life, and when or if it does, you will know why.
I just felt the need to advise you to take heed, and think beyond the money. Are you really doing the right thing? Only you decide. It's your life.

Do not take this lightly, I had a similar experience, except that there was no face on it. I found this stone in the stony river ( Hutt river) I was mysteriously attracted to it, but i was bewildered as to the naturally occuring symbols on it. They were letters of the alphabet an they made a word "soup", I was thinking ... you know ' what the..." I used to be a chef, so thought this couldn't be a coincidence.

Anyway, not really sure what to do with it, one day as a joke I chuked it into a pot of soup I had made for customers, and appropriately named it "Hutt River Stone Soup" My friend I am rich today because of that soup, i just kept making the same stuff over and over again using the same stone, many people come in for that soup daily, many for seconds, the record is one guy came in for the 10th time in one day, I sell hundreds of bowls of this stuff every day, at $10 a shot its not bad.

Till today, people come from far and beyond to taste this stone soup. I think it's an interesting wee pebble with a rust stain that can (if you REALLY use your imagination) be seen to resemble the Virgin Mary, Mother Theresa, Mark Sainsbury, a Walrus, Paddington Bear, and probably a THOUSAND other people or things. I was hoping that maybe someone in the geology department could verify that the markings on the pebble are genuine. I have other pebbles with same type of markings/stains, that were found at the same location.
I am no geologist, but was hoping the geology department at the university would have some way of comparing markings on the pebbles to prove that the image on my pebble was made by mother nature and not by me. :)

I have been watching this auction along with what seems like the whole of NZ and at first I thought what a load of Sh*t... but after reading these Q & A's I now believe you deserve whateva you can get for it just for the fantastic way you have delt with all the crackpots that have given you crap... omg Lisa marie, 'chinapieces is right', Iv'e just checked the statue book and the item, if sold, is indeed a taxable commodity and DOC (IRD more precisely is due it's cut....sad, very very sad....form a religious trust or charity quicky and put the 'dosh' in there, while making yourself a trustee at the same time...should do the trick I think.
