Description
This Poly 1 is a special piece of computing history. And would make a great center piece, art installation in the right environment.
Why should silicon valley get all the credit. This computing icon was designed by Professor Scott in Wellington NZ. As such it is truly a landmark piece of technological history. Here's why:
- Was the first computer purpose designed for educational purposes.
- Was the first production computer to boast a full colour monitor (some people questioned the need for a colour monitor for a 'computing' machine).
- Preceded the apple Macintosh (and the laptop) to be the first computer that integrated the monitior, processor AND keyboard in one console. (eat your heart out steve jobs - RIP)
- was a pioneer in networking daisy chaining multiple machines together.
- Was the first computer to be used in the rehabilitation of the chronically disabled.
- Used by the Australian military
- And was WAY ahead of its time in breaking out of the beige box with cool fashion colours like this fabulous submarine yellow. (also came in red, green brown and black i think. ) (eat your heart out again steve jobs - RIP)
Rescued from the tip when my high school upgraded to Apple 2E's this unit used to work fine but 10 yrs in storage and its not booting up properly. Pretty simple construction so probably wouldn't take much to get it back up to speed by someone with a little tech know how and some contact cleaner.
Somewhere I have a basic user manual fro it too . Will try to dig it up.
there is also a bit of info floating around on the net. google: poly computer
