Hi there. Would it be possible to get a clear closeup picture of the shield stamp in front of the 53 on the receiver ring? This may be a proof mark and the shield could reveal where it was proofed. Obviously it's not a U.S. manufacturer or military proof. Thanks much...Jim

Congrats on the good description and great photos smle. That performance deserves praise ! It makes it easier for old, worn out, M1 collectors like me. I have #33664XX, which in Saginaw language, is not too far away from yours, maybe brothers and sisters?. Mike.

Hi Mike, I also have another M1 with a very close number that I have had for a few years. Interesting aye! I wonder if that is just coincidance or if alot of Saginaw rifles came down here with troops in ww11. Can you shed any light on the "unit marking"? (shield, 53) Cheers.

Exchanging e-mails is no violation of rules, as long as the item is not arranged for sale outside of TradeMe. A seller and buyer are expected to have questions and answers that do not necessarily belong on the listing Q&A for public viewing or wasting others time. SMLE. As you probably know, Germany was divided into different occupation zones at the end of the war. Carbines were supplied to some of the newly evolving German, civilian, law enforcement agencies in some of those zones. One of these was the American occupation district of Wuerttemberg-Baden. Your Carbine is from there, as indicated by the WB on the bottom of the trigger guard. Can probably tell you more if you can post a detailed pic of that shield. Hope this helps.

WB-S-MAN means American Occupation Zone, district of Wurttemberg-Baden, Stadt (City), Mannheim. The shield is the crest for the City of Mannheim during the time period, which was 1945-1952. the numbers 53 after the crest are the inventory number used by the City of Mannheim Police. The city police were primarily armed with handguns, in the U.S. zone the 1911A1 and the S&W Victory revolver. M1 carbines were issued to the city police as an armament in reserve. Hi, As I said in my auction, first option will go to the sucessfull bidder on the other stuff. It would be good to see the sling & bag go with it as this rifle is in such nice condition & these two things are also like new & would kind off complete the package. Anyway, I carn't offer them on this auction as this is against T.M. rules. Cheers.
