This is part of a fund-raiser to send Paraparaumu College’s Boys 1st Hockey team to a tournament in Auckland, in September. The winning bid will be placed in a college bank account.
A species name is offered for a new species of marine crustacean of the group Tanaidacea. It is from the shore near Plimmerton and Worser Bay (Wellington) and will be published as part of a larger paper on other new species. It is tiny, about 1.5 mm long, but is attractive and adds new diversity to its group, being also a new genus.
A species name is a binomial, i.e. in two parts: the genus (eg. Homo, for humans) and the specific epithet (eg. sapiens) resulting, as this example, in Homo sapiens. Names are Latinized. For epithets after people, these add the ‘i’ for males, and ‘ae’ for females.
Examples for males: cooki, banksi, huttoni . For females: clairae, oderhertyae, mawbyae.
This is the part of the name being sold here.
Ideally, surnames are used but forenames are OK, even combined, if these are short, such as ‘joebloggsi’. I would really prefer it that the name was 12 letters at the most. Long or unwieldy names are not favoured.
As this is formal science serious bidders not sure about a name, should post their suggestion in the auctions Q&A section, for me to take a look at.
I am also offering the winning bid a framed drawing of the new species.
I can provide info’ about me and tanaids on request but here is a link for a recent background on the group, including a lovely image of some of the diversity: http://www.plosone.org/article/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal
.pone.0033068 The new species here looks closest to animal ‘d’, or the figure attached to this auction.
