John's Cast Off

  • Reserve met Reserve met
  • Closed: Sun 8 Feb 2009, 2:01 pm
  • Listing #: 200719762
On Saturday, 17 January, Prime Minister John Key broke his arm in two places in a fall at an event in Auckland. During a trip to Papua New Guinea for the Pacific Forum Leaders' meeting and a subsequent stopover in the Solomon Islands, his cast was signed by a number of international dignitaries, including Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd. Now that signed cast - which will come off in the next two weeks - is available to bidders on TradeMe. The beneficiary of the winning bid will be The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ, which operates blindness prevention programmes in the Pacific. The Foundation estimates there are 5,000 blind people in the Solomon Islands, mainly needing cataract surgery. A further 15,000 will be suffering from poor vision from cataracts and the need for glasses. Five eye doctors and 20 eye nurses are required to address blindness and vision disability in the Solomon Islands. There are currently two eye doctors and 12 eye nurses working in the Solomon Islands. John Key will also sign the cast and - subject to scheduling arrangements - will meet with the winning bidder for morning tea.

Will John key pay for morning tea? curtis39 (33 )  9:52 am, Tue 3 Feb
The morning tea will be John's personal shout. 10:31 am, Tue 3 Feb
What a great auction! Is it also true that the Prime Minister is donating his salary as PM to charity?? Also what are the chances of having a couple of signed $100 notes auctioned for charity? Thanks. adamhoopz (285 )  10:26 am, Tue 3 Feb
John has stated in media interviews that he donates part of his salary to charity but that he considers the amounts and charities to be a personal matter. There are currently no plans for future auctions. 10:30 am, Tue 3 Feb
As a poor student and solo mum, it baffles me how some people could actually afford to bid so much on a smelly cast, but believe me, If I had the money, I would bid right along with them. This is an amazing example of how generous and kind us Kiwis can be. Well done to you all who are bidding, running the auction and John for putting himself out there, not worried about looking like a bit of a spoon! You are awesome! Maybe you can keep up the charity idea with some other kooky collectables :) seraphine1 (106 )  10:28 am, Tue 3 Feb

As soon as the arm is healed - probably within the next two weeks. 10:51 am, Tue 3 Feb
Hi Staff of John Key ;) This too is out of my price range but i just wanted to say this is a brilliant idea. Helen would never have even considered it. So far i am stoked with what you've done for our country. Brilliant. Keep up the good work, but maybe not a good idea to break your arm too often ;) All the best - Helen :) krafty2 (43 )  10:56 am, Tue 3 Feb

Hey, wot, no comment for my last entry. Pity the bid taking it to $20K was not true, would have been wonderful for the charity. I can't bid but wouldn't mind adding $10 to the final bid, if that can be done. good on you, better than putting it in the rubbish. I'll check out the website. jae9 (111 )  11:35 am, Tue 3 Feb

Out of curiousity, is there any chance that John Key will break any other part of his body while he is PM? los007 (42 )  11:56 am, Tue 3 Feb
We certainly hope not! 2:34 pm, Tue 3 Feb
I'm in the market for another cast but there has been no mention of the size of this cast. Will it fit a standard sized arm? Is there a maximum proportional height and weight that you would expect it to fit? mbar126 (5 )  11:58 am, Tue 3 Feb
Should you win the auction, we'd encourage you to consult with your physician about this proposed course of action. 2:44 pm, Tue 3 Feb

Great idea and excellent cause... Mr Key may be surprised how popular he is... I bet he could run an auction for a selected charity once per month for morning tea (his shout) and pic's with Mr Key.. Could be a great way for to meet the people, and support charities... Best of luck with the auction. taurus2 (1371 )  1:16 pm, Tue 3 Feb

The awesome amount of interest in our incredible new PM is a testament to how NZ was SOOO hanging out to get a leader that we could TRUST and be ENTHUSED about. Not every one can bid but it seems everyone wants to at last get in behind and support a PM that is a stright shooter and we dont have to look behind the scenes to if he is just telling "Red Helen's" again. Go hard in 09 JK!! cgp2 (7 )  1:19 pm, Tue 3 Feb

My sister in u.s.a wants to know if John Key is going to list New Zealands assets on trade me or will they just be sold off in the usual National fashion? Given how well there dollar is against ours now would be a good time to buy Kiwibank for her. marie327 (511 )  2:40 pm, Tue 3 Feb

Good on you John - why not go for broke and "add value" by having some other VIPs & Celebs sign (R.McCaw, Ms Clark, Gov Gen, V Vili, Mad Butcher etc etc.)it might mean even more money for a good cause! gulf46 (66 )  1:23 pm, Wed 4 Feb

What a great idea, Prime Minister! Thanks to those answering the questions as well - you're doing a great job. I can't afford to bid but have sent a donation to Fred Hollows Foundation to add to the amount raised by your auction. I suggest all the other traders who can't afford to bid do the same. Between us we could make the final sum much larger :-) flygran (400 )  5:20 pm, Wed 4 Feb

Not certain we can provide those numbers but we'll ask the Foundation. 11:49 pm, Wed 4 Feb

You'd have to talk to Winston Peters about that. 11:51 pm, Wed 4 Feb
Are you checking the feedback of the current bidders, you may notice that most of them have very few trades - I'm not doubting their bids BUT when you are dealing with bids approaching 20k, its serious money. Any prudent seller (like John perhaps) would be making sure the bidders are SERIOUS traders with legitimate feedback. Forewarned is fore"armed" so to speak. rapid200sx (862 )  11:08 pm, Wed 4 Feb
Unfortunately, even bogus bidders have had good feedback on their trades. 11:52 pm, Wed 4 Feb

I applaude the spirit driving this auction. I am a little dissapointed the proceeds will end up off-shore. Charity really does begin at home. Still good it is going to a charity nonetheless. peejay5 (225 )  11:37 pm, Wed 4 Feb

I wonder how many people are bidding for the morning tea rather than the cast? Do you reckon this would have turned out any different if it had been "Morning tea with John Key - free souvenir cast included!"? Its great to see so many people helping out with this charity. You could make a business selling off political souvenirs. :) clickolls (44 )  12:24 am, Thu 5 Feb

I disagree with you deekayem. I think it would pull more money in if it was signed by Helen, Michael and Winston. Hey John and team, awesome auction. It is doing really well, and if you decide to get the other 3 signatures, please dont let them feel how heavy your arm is. lol. Seeing as the bidding is too high for alot of people, I suggest that everyone watching this (and reading ALL the questions that you are so diligently answering) could do something - (maybe not so generous)and make a donation to a local charity!~! Morning, Just out of interest, has Mr Keys read any of these comments? hope so cause it just shows how us nzer's are behind him 100% ... Excellent idea this was too. Hi there. I am like many people who are watching this auction, I do not have the money to bid and I endorse most of the comments being made. Thank you very much to John Key for bringing respect, and the pride of the people back to the office of Prime Minister. Thank you also to the people who are answering questions on this auction. It must add a lot of time to your working day, but the fact that you are answering them, lets people know that their questions and comments are valued. kowdon (19 )  11:36 am, Thu 5 Feb

I just want to say to John that I am really impressed with him as Prime Minister. I think he handles difficult situations with dignity and sense. I would be keen for Mr Keys to have a blog page where people could pass on their encouragement to him. As these comments are seen by his staff maybe you the staff could suggest something. I am an Aussie living here in NZ and am proud to have Mr Keys as my Prime Minister. I look forward to his continuing leadership of this country. Blessings Mr Keys. rube59 (58 )  7:14 pm, Thu 5 Feb

Hello, will the medical staff who made the blue cast be invited to sign it as well? Once the medical staff remove the cast, it could then be mounted as an art sculpture signed, dated and titled by Mr. Key "THE RIGHT ARM OF DIALOGUE" or better still, "VISION WITH DIALOGUE," or titled by Mr. Key's personal theme. Good luck and all the very best to everyone involved and also the worthy cause being supported. hachiko (15 )  8:57 pm, Thu 5 Feb

If only that cast could talk! It would have quite a few tales to tell I am sure! Are you sure the people in orthopaedics didn't imbed a mic or a tracking device in the plaster during the casting process?! Have just donated to the Fred Hollows foundation now and I challenge everyone else viewing the auction to do the same. Gidday, quick question. If Helen were to sign the cast do you think there'd be a strong likelihood that she'll claim it as an original piece of artwork? And if so, would that not invalidate any claim the eventual winner might have on the cast? A concerned [cough] National supporter. kristos24 (253 )  11:32 am, Fri 6 Feb
HI THERE,GREAT STUFF.I HEARD JOHN SAY ON THE GOOD MORNING SHOW,IN AN INTERVIEW WITH PAUL HENRY.ALL BIDDERS GET MORNING TEA WITH HIM.I GUESS THAT WAS AT THE BEGINNING OF THE AUCTION.NOBODY COULD HAVE IMAGINED THAT THERE WILL BE SO MUCH INTEREST.I DID BID TWICE,BUT $10000.00 WAS MY LIMIT. Helen you are having trouble convincing Geoff? He doesn’t want the right arm of the National Party. You should point out that it’s not all bad. While his right arm is in Plaster he has to use his Left arm to vote in the house. garrysue (669 )  7:02 pm, Fri 6 Feb
Hi support staff...i feel a little guilty at leaving a message for you as you have obviously already been so tolerant of all the comments so far, however I like most of the other TM members just want to express my pride in our country and our PM and I have faith in a better future under National. Like so many others who have posted questions, I couldn't afford to bid on this auction, but I applaud the sentiment and the commitment to the charity. As it happens, I am also wearing a blue plaster cast - on my leg. If I offer to make a donation (according to my means) to the charity, could I get the Prime Minister to sign my cast? His would be the only signature, and I promise to ensure that the signed cast never reaches any auction site. scratchfoot (215 )  9:22 pm, Fri 6 Feb

Well I found this auction by accident. I could never afford to be able to bid on this sadly :( I am off to buy a lotto ticket tomorrow, and if I win, I am racing back to my puter to bid on this! Ya think that John instead of having morning tea wid me would consider having it with the elderly people I work with in a Auckland Resthome? They don't go out much. I wouldn't expect our PM to shout morning tea for them, just to perhaps have a cup of tea and take the time to chat to make their day :) dotcom42 (463 )  11:10 pm, Fri 6 Feb

It's great to see all the support for the PM and I do have to agree, it's great having a new PM who is 'up with the times' so to speak. The attack on him at Waitangi was appauling, but he carried on with dignity and that was great. Can't bid but it has prompted me to donate to the foundation. Thanks for reminding us of the wonderful legacy Fred left..he'd be so chuffed. It is a shame that the government uses this as A PR exercise to bolster their credibility, WHY does John Key need a broken arm and then his CAST to donate proceeds to Fred Hollows WHY NOT just cough up and donate to the cause anyhow, Fred Hollows foundation has been around for many years AND knocking on many doors for funding, like this government or successive governments didn't already know that, the biggest POSITIVE is that the many that can't afford to bid have more than likely donated blondieone (651 )  12:15 pm, Sat 7 Feb
Thank you for your comments. The auction and the charity were suggested by RAMSI staff in the Solomons. The Foundation reports a subsequent spike in visitors to their website but late in the week there had been no substantial increase in online donations. 12:36 pm, Sat 7 Feb

we once did an auction to buy goats for African families, the rules where a little different, if you bid and didnt win, you still had to pay your top bid towards the project. Wouldnt it be great if everyone who bid and didnt win (there are a few now) still made the donation towards the cause. Is it because of the cast that Mr Key has done nothing about the economic crisis over the last 90 days? pamiros (344 )  2:49 pm, Sat 7 Feb
Hi there, fantastic to see JK leading NZ. What an inspirational guy he is, this only one way of proving that. I have heard that John donates part of or all of his PM salary to charity, is this true? And keep up the good work on answering all these questions! Good luck for the remainder of the auction. aaronb78 (39 )  3:29 pm, Sat 7 Feb
Thanks for your support. Your comments been passed along to John Key. John has stated that he donates part of his salary to charity but regards the amount and the recipients to be a personal matter. 4:40 pm, Sat 7 Feb

A genuine question - Will the cast be in two pieces? Also, how long will the plaster cast last? Does it crumble over time??, just worried that if I decide to make an offer, this investment could deteriorate over time, like Aucklands leaky houses. Thanks tjeerd (212 )  6:03 pm, Sat 7 Feb
Good on you Mr Key, you are doing a fantastic job, please don't turn into a politician, they end up in lala land. You have your finger on the pulse and I have confidence in you. Thank God Helen's gone, there is now hope for the future. rachel1969 (57 )  6:04 pm, Sat 7 Feb
Another genuine question - if I bid and win the auction, When I have the morning tea with John and have my photo taken.... would it be ok if I were to do a painting of the photo, possibly to sell?, because I'm an artist. Any copyright issues? tjeerd (212 )  6:14 pm, Sat 7 Feb
Hi :) Just wondering will John come to where we live or will we have to go to him for the morning tea??? Thanks :D rebbry (610 )  6:38 pm, Sat 7 Feb

To the person who suggested that the Government is using this as a PR exercise - hang on a minute, Mr Key donates a large proportion of his salary to charity - he is hardly using this as a PR exercise, but merely obliging with something he was asked to do. You have my full support in everything you have done Mr Key since November - thank you for giving my family hope now you are our PM - we don't need to leave NZ after all. boo-boo (130 )  8:18 pm, Sat 7 Feb

Hello, this is Dr Phibes. I wish to appeal to you for a small portion of the final bid, to go towards a cause which is affecting an ever increasing amount of New Zealanders and immigrants. I front a society to raise awareness of and eliminate 'high rising termination', also known as 'uptalk' and 'intonation contour'. It sounds like some one is asking a question with every sentence they form? I also request an alteration to the PM's cast to prevent him from getting a hand-out. Thank you. dr.phibes (1781 )  9:59 pm, Sat 7 Feb

If the amount and to whom are a personal matter then this auction and the recipients aren't very personal really. Whilst it is still a worthy cause, charity really does begin at home. To analogise, I would make sure my own children are cared for/looked after before the neighbours kids, kids down the road or kids overseas. billmarina (249 )  9:37 am, Sun 8 Feb

Like so many who have added question, genuine queries or just wanting to part of history, I too say thankyou. Yes we're going through economic hardship, but who would know from the spring in our steps. This is our leadership leading from the front, setting good examples for our kids & grandkids. To the person (people) who have used this median to have a go - get a life & get over it. You Go!! JK. Well done. bpcat (54 )  1:00 pm, Sun 8 Feb

I am sure I speak for the majority of the 143,000 plus people that have viewed this site with interest. For less than $20,000 a chance to meet our Prime Minister and at the same time give to an outstanding appeal at the same time is really a very rare but welcome opportunity. May you always remain humble and work to help those who find life a struggle May God Bless You! liffie (104 )  1:14 pm, Sun 8 Feb
