Description
This is a very rare early 70s Dan Armstrong Plexi/Lucite/Acrylic replica, made by Electra. Electra was the brand-name given to Japanese-imported guitars distributed by St. Louis Music in the States. The Dan Armstrong replica was the first guitar brought in under the Electra name, and so its likely the guitar for auction here was made in either 1971 or 1972.
Though the Ampeg reissues have become popular in recent years through the Foo Fighters Dave Grohl (see the video for "All My Life"), the original Ampeg Dan Armstrong guitars and various replicas were used by Keith Richards (Rolling Stones), Greg Ginn (Black Flag), Joe Perry (Aerosmith), Ron Wood (Faces, Rolling Stones), Geezer Butler (Black Sabbath) and Lou Reed. Though many have debated the value of the Armstrong replicas, the Electra is still highly regarded as an excellent guitar in its own right. It features the slide-out single coil pickup, and current Armstrong pickups will slot right in should you choose to go for the humbucker.
This guitar was purchased three years ago in the States from Daves Guitar Shop (Wisconsin), a very reputable independent that has server the likes of Billy Gibbons and Eddie Vedder for the last 25 years.
Since then, it has never been gigged and was used for one song on a session date. It is in very good condition for a guitar of its age, though it is not cosmetically perfect. It will need the intonation redone, and new strings, but other wise, a very playable guitar. Overall, I would conservatively rate it a 6.5 out of 10. It comes with its own custom-fitted hard case.
I am selling as it never gets used, and will go to fund boring things like new curtains and baby clothes. Thanks for looking!
