This New Zealand poster by Auckland artist Arthur Thompson celebrates the Coral route service to Tahiti from NZ's own Tasman Empire Airways Ltd (TEAL). First charted in wartime the route took passengers from Auckland to Fiji, Samoa, Tahiti and the Cook Islands using four Solent IV flying boats.
Flying was glamourous, passengers dressed in their Sunday best and when the coral route ceased in 1960 it was the last scheduled international flying boat service.
Now you can enjoy this gorgeous art from a time when air travel was a luxury and a treat.
This poster in its own unique way captures the excitement and glamour of early travel - Of course it plays to 1950s perceptions of the 'exotic other' that wealthy air travellers might have imagined could be found at each TEAL destination.
