Description
WHEN DID YOU LAST SEE 1 OF THESE?? If you were born after 1960 you probably haven't-well outside of a museum? I suspect it may be a product of Kiwi ingenuity as I haven't seen them in any other countries. Before vehicles had the luxury of electric indicator and stop lamps drivers had to wind [turn a handle] their door-glass down and put their arm outside to indicate they were about to turn right. If they intended to stop they bent their arm upright at the elbow with hand pointed to the sky. Some clever British car designers invented small electric turning arms that were housed in the pillar between F& R Doors, and they were illuminated. 1950s MORRIS, AUSTIN,HUMBERS etc used them prior to F&R Mounted flashing turn lamps. Lorrys or Trucks were a different story as loads would obscure any arm out the window. So some clever B invented this extension arm. When not in use it stayed in a vertical position and to use the driver opened his window and manually raised the hinged arm, the yellow metal hand pointed right -indicating the intended turn.If however the driver intended stopping he simply pulled the handle on his end of the arm and the yellow hand pointed skywards to indicate the stop.SO SIMPLE YET SO CLEVER-IT DESERVES TO BE IN Te Papa. Arm is in perfect working order and includes mounting bracket, hinge and stay.Dont know what V.T.N.Z. would make of it but its the perfect bit of detail for your old FARGO,FEDERAL,FORD,STUDEBAKER-maybe even an Austin or Leyland. MEASURES 35ins/890mm with hand in turn position,34ins/865mm with hand in stop position.Has a small amount of surface rust but is original paint so one expects some patina!
