The old conservation of momentum experiment is contained in a nice wooden box. It consists of 10 metal balls each with an attachment and a metal V groove which was used to help set up the balls.

Closed box measures 31 cm long, 6 cm high and 9 cm deep; balls 25 mm in diameter and V groove 28 cm long and just over 1 kg in weight.

There is no metal frame, that was part of the set to suspend the balls from and one attachment has come loose from the ball.

A typical Newton's cradle consists of a series of identically sized metal balls suspended in a metal frame. It consists of a row of 10 steel balls each suspended from a piece of string in such way that the balls are just touching and they are in a neat straight row. The V groove helps set them up in this way.
For the demonstration the left end ball is moved out some distance and released to crash into the remaining row of nine balls. What happens then is that none of the balls move in any way, including the ball that crashed into the row, except the right end ball, which suddenly springs away and swings out. When this ball starts to swing back towards the row of balls the process repeats so you get this image of a row of balls with the extreme left and right balls taking turns popping away from the row while the middle row of balls remains stationery.
