Description
This clock is a cast iron clock which is called a Schwarzwälder Uhrenträger or Uhrenverkäufer in German. (Black Forest clock carrier or seller). In the 19th century clock sellers went around the Black Forest area in Germany carrying a number of clocks on their back or in front, trying to sell them to farmers in the area. They were often robbed, as they were sometimes carrying quite an amount of money. Many of these clocks were made around 1850 and they came in many variations. If you google the German word you will see many different pictures. This clock is 40cm high and in very good condition. The walking stick and the base may need a small touch up with black paint, but the rest still looks very good. Amazingly enough the small clock he carries in front still works and keeps good time. It has a very small key and a brass pendulum. He also has a clock on his back, but that is only a model. A clock maker once told me the clock was probably original, but I have a cutting from a Carters antique guide of 1999 to say that even reproductions made in the 1950s were still worth between A$600 and A$700 I would prefer pick up, but if it needs to be posted it will be at the buyer's risk.
