1837 Portsmouth Hard Times Token E.F. Sise & Co
This is a Hard Times Token from E.F. Sise & Co in Portsmouth, N.H., dated 1837.
Hard-times tokens are large cent-sized copper tokens, struck from about 1833 through 1843, serving as unofficial currency. These privately made pieces, comprising merchant, political and satirical pieces, were used during a time of political and financial crisis in the United States
The owner of the firm that issued these tokens, Edward F. Sise, was born in Dover, New Hampshire on September 19th, 1799 and died May 25th, 1868.
The company continued after Sise's withdrawal in 1854, until at least 1895.
Verdigris on the token and been cleaned at some stage, but all wording and date are clear, historical US token. Please see photos for condition of the token (to follow)
