Qing Dynasty Zitan Calligraphy Case

The following auction is for a superb calligrapher's box crafted out of solid zitan/hongmu. We're not 100% certain which timber the box is crafted out of but it is a hardwood with a very nice patina. The box dates from the mid to late Qing Dynasty ca. 1850 and is a beautiful example of Chinese craftsmanship. The dove-tailing on the box is excellent and the Buddhist lions that have been hand carved in a raised relief on the surface of the case are very unique and well done. Such cases, while not extremely rare, are difficult to come across especially given the condition and beauty of the following example.

All the brassware on the hinges and lock are original and the case is in superb condition with no great signs of wear and tear. There is a seperate section inside the box that can be removed to store paper on the lower section.
