One Day's Grace makes a range of rosaries, prayer beads and rosary bracelets here in New Zealand, all made by hand with you in mind.
The Irish Penal Rosary is a single-decade pocket rosary which has certain characteristics that developed during the Penal Times in Ireland around 1600, when it was a crime to practice the Catholic religion. Death was the common penalty for being caught.
This small rosary (also known as "An Paidrin Beag", or "The Little Rosary") developed so the devout could continue praying with less fear of being seen. The crucifix has shorter arms than usual, which means it could more easily be hidden up a sleeve or in a pocket. There was a ring at one end which could be placed over a finger to prevent the rosary from falling out and also used to count the number of prayers said. The rosaries were usually made linked or with soft cord so they collapsed in on themselves into a very small bundle that could be concealed in the hand.
I've made this one with deep red & brown ceramic beads reflecting the turbulence of the Penal Times, with a hematite ring. The crucifix is sturdy, and the wire-wrapped construction makes this rosary suitable for rugged hands.
Length: 31cm
Crucifix: 4cm x 2cm
Comes in attractive packaging together with a card explaining about the Irish Penal Rosary.
