Description
This is one of the most interesting Kalagas I have seen.It is unlike most which are of a repetitive pattern. This one however shows Hanuman the monkey God who was a loyal companion of Rama trying to find Sita Rama's wife who was captured during his fight with the demon king Ravana. It was Hanuman who discovered her on the island of Lanka Ravana's kingdom. In this kalaga one can see Hanuman setting out on his voyage with an image of Sita in his mind, great story great piece of art. Dating of these is difficult but one sure way is checking the myriad of small metal discs.IF they are silver plated copper as these are then it was made before 1910. This kalaga is in excellent condition and is mounted on a wooden frame. Very few old Burmese Kalagas have survived unless they have been removed from the country when virtually new(due to the humid conditions in their home country) and I think it highly possible that this one is unique and must have taken many months to complete. It measures 1.27mtr x 65cm.and can be shipped but pickup would be preferred.
