Description
This complete antique Japanese jizai kagi, or hearth hanger/hook includes a striking red patina bamboo root, pot hook, and large tai (sea bream) yokogi (cross arm / holder for the hook).
The bamboo pole has the root section intact, which is considered by some to be auspicious and/or a high status, high-class feature.
The tai yokogi is possibly made of cryptomeria wood and is one of the largest yokogi I came across when I collected them. The detailing is clean and crisp, and the bream is carved with a sense of realism that is at once both stately and a little lively.
The bamboo section measures approximately 117 cm long, the chain is about 36 cm long, and the fish yokogi is about 46 cm long and 28 cm tall.
The set most likely dates from the Meiji Era.
The general condition is excellent, with some splitting to the bamboo, but not other damage. Overall, this is one of the nicest jizai kagi sets I’ve seen.
This jizai kagi would make an excellent addition to a discerning Japanese antiques collection.
Postage will be via NZ Post’s Courier Post option with signature, at cost.
