Description

This is an original hand coloured engraving of a The Giraffe for, Alcide Charles Victor Marie Dessalines d'Orbigny (1802 - 1857) who was a French naturalist who made major contributions in many areas, including zoology. He is best known for his compilation of some of the finest natural history prints ever produced, Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle. The drawings the prints were engraved from were by the leading French natural history artists of the time, such as Travies, Blanchard, Oudart, Pretre and Maubert. In fine condition. 240 x 150 mm Minor age spots. Matted for framing.
