When I was asked to compile a book on the history of policing in Auckland, I undertook the project knowing that the official three-volume history of the New Zealand Police was well into production.

The first volume, `Policing The Colonial Frontier' by Richard S. Hill, was already published, one which would satisfy the needs of scholars and researchers.
