Description
This listing is for a superbly preserved Pattern 1912 Officers CAVALRY SWORD in it's original leather field scabbard, with frog and leather cavalry tassel
It's former owner whose name is engraved on the blade was Stanley H. De La Mare (M.I.D.) who served for three years during The Great War in The Royal Engineers Tunnelling Company
The sword is wonderfully ORIGINAL & has not been cleaned, polished, or abused by it's former owners
Retaining all it's original Sam Browne Cavalry Officer's leather Sam Browne belt mounts GOOD order but could USE Balsam
The hilt, guard, & entire handle assembly is 100% firm on the blade with the original peen on pommel undisturbed since the day it made
The Pattern 1912 Cavalry Officer's Sword was the LAST sword pattern incepted into the British & Commonwealth Armies
It represents the final development & the PERFECTION of DESIGN of the British Cavalry sword
This was finally achieved just as the sword became OBSOLETE in it's use in modern warfare
For years debate had raged over whether the thrusting action, or the slashing action, or a combination of both ? was of primary importance to the mounted soldier on horseback This thrusting sword is designed to be held forward, horizontally, very similar to the Cavalryman's LANCE, it is equipped with a thumb depression atop the front of the handgrip to aid in it's aim and set toward the cavalryman's enemy, whether opponent mounted, or on foot
King George the 5th approved the Pattern 1912's design although he said the sword was "Damned Ugly"
Stanley de la Mare was born in 1876 and served with the British South African Police (B.S.A.P.) for 12 months
He left the BSAP in 1898 and joined the 49th Company Imperial Yeomanry to fight in the 2nd Boer War.
Early in WW1 he was commissioned into the Montgomeryshire Yeomanry on 10/10/1914
He was MID (Mentioned In Dispatches) on 13/11/1916 = IE when a TUNNELING COMPANY Officer
He served with the Royal Engineers Tunnelling Company from November 1915 to March 1918
