Listing #: 143277154
The International Military Archives in Washington, D.C., commissioned the world-famous swordsmiths of Toledo, Spain, to re-create The Sword of Charlemagne. Franklin Mint was appointed to supervise its distribution.

His name was Charlemagne (Born 742/747 - Died 814). And he inspired legends. Warrior, conqueror, founder of the Holy Roman Empire, he was also a patron of learning and the arts.

Charlemagne himself named his legendary sword "Joyeuse" - symbol of joy and glory. Legend says it was created to hold within its pommel the tip of the spear which pierced the side of Jesus on the cross. For centuries, it was used in crowning the Kings of France.

This full-sized recreation is forged from the finest non-tarnishing steel. It was re-created by the legendary armourers of Toledo, Spain - whose centuries-old heritage of craftsmanship has made Toledo steel the world-wide standard in excellence.

The blade has been etched with the heraldic emblems of France's three greatest monarchs: the two-headed eagle of Charlemagne, the fleur-de-lys of Louis XIV, and the imperial eagle of Napoleon.

The intricate thousand-year-old design of the famous "winged pommel" features mythological birds whose wings and legs end in scrolls.

The richly-patterned hilt, once decorated with fleur-de-lys, was reworked by the famous swordmaker Biennais, who removed those symbols of the overthrown monarchy to make the sword more suitable for the coronation of the Citizen Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte.

The cross-guards take the shape of winged dragons, their eyes inlaid with cabochons of lapis lazuli - to represent wisdom, power and ferocity in battle. Like hilt and pommel, moreover, the cross-guard is entirely sheathed in pure 24 carat gold electroplate - recapturing completely the sword's legendary splendour.

Supplied with an oak finish wall rack.

Overall length - pommel to tip is 97.8cm (38 & 1/2 inches).
