RARE British SWORD Foot Artillery HANGER 1830
- Closed: Thu 28 Jun 2012, 9:00 pm
- Listing #: 486287080
In the Horse Artillery the private soldier (enlisted ranks, later known as "gunner") carried the same sidearm as his counterpart in the Light Cavalry. (IE the Cavalry 3-bar hilt pattern 1821)
However their dismounted comrades carried this SCARCE Foot Artillery Hanger (A sword similar to a cutlass, used by woodsmen & soldiers in 17th - 18th centuries)
These seldom-encountered swords often misidentified &/or overlooked in some major sword references
The British Foot Artillery Hanger pattern was incepted in 1830, only to become redundant 23 years later
In 1853 the Foot Artillery were issued the Artillery SWORD BAYONET so their Brass handled Hanger's ceased to be
HENCE a VERY SCARCE sword when seen with *BRITISH* ISSUE-MARKS
See "Cut & Thrust Weapons" by John Wilkinson-Latham, (Page # 29 copied here)
Absolutely SIMILAR to the French Model 1817 Infantry Hanger, itself modeled from the Napoleonic "Sagre-Briquet", which was extensively copied by German manufacturers & distributed to many European nations in the 19th Century
Blade length = 600 mm Overall = 740 mm
CONDITION = exceptionally GOOD condition
There are 3 "nicks" in the cutting edge, 1 quite deep (2-3 mm) These look to be genuinely OLD & could well be evidence of combat usage ?
NO rust NO pitting NO bends No cracks. Blade retains it's original length & shape
PARTICULARLY GOOD EXAMPLE probably the NICEST example that I have ever offered for sale
These SCARCE swords are even RARER when accompanied by the period LEATHER SCABBARD as is this fine example.
All the leather & it's stitching is in fantastically well-preserved condition.
GUARANTEED to be a genuine ANTIQUE Circa 1850's
This sword will ENHANCE any fine collection of fighting swords
Sold with my 100% unconditional money-back GUARANTEE of authenticity good for "life" & includes postage BOTH WAYS
