Clay tempering is a art for as well as a science. The traditional clay tempering techniques are perhaps the pinnacle of Japanese sword design. The resulting clay tempering produces an edge hardness of 60HRC while the spine remains at softer 40HRC. This means that the edge is more resilient to dulling (its is very sharp!) while the spine is able to flex whilst cutting targets, allowing maximum force without breakage. The blade is fully hand polished to a mirror shine and sharpened to an impeccable standard.

The 'Tomoye' or 'Tomoe' is the name of one of Japans oldest symbols. It comes in many forms. Though the popular trinity spiral kind is largely associated with the Samurai.

Our 'Tomoye' Clay Tempered Katana, incorporates the tomoye symbol right through its design. The solid cast brass fuchi and Kashira (handle fittings) feature tomoye wheels, as well as the solid iron tsuba (hand guard) finished in black patina also features a perforated tomoye design. The tsuka (handle) is wood with real sting ray skin, tightly bound in black cotton ito (braid) with brass dragon menuki. The chunky sageo is black/ copper heavy gauge silk. The saya is finished inh high gloss black lacquer.
