SCARCE 19th Century Police Constabulary Officer's Hanger Sword

CIRCA 1830's

This is a "Foot Sword" for dismounted officers to carry on foot patrol while walking their beat`so the blade on this sword is relatively short at 24 inches

Mounted officers typically would have carried a blade of considerably more reach (29"-31")

This sword was carried from a Baldric (An across-body diagonal strap with a "Frog" at base to retain the sword)

Similar to the 1870's Patt Constabulary sword shown in my NZ Police reference, but differs in design of guard & has deeper curvature

This type saw extensive use in Britain for many years & was likely used all across the British Commonwealth, possibly also by Customs Officers

The blade is particularly robust, broad, thick, with large deep fullers, that both lighten & strengthen this blade

THICK blade use-sharpened throughout its length & around the "false point"

Several small areas of light pitting that would likely look better with a good clean & sand

Excellent condition blade for 150+ years of age = NO bends NO edge nicks NO cracks

Contained in its original leather scabbard which has both of its original brass fittings intact & firmly attached

Both stitching & Leather is in very sound condition

The SHARKSKIN wrapped handle retains all it's original wrap & is 100% fully intact (This model of sword was not wire-bound)

The Brass "D" shaped guard retains much of its original "Japaned" finish & the Peen at the end looks to have lain undisturbed for its entire life

There is a tiny degree of movement in the handle that detracts little

Overall an exceptionally well preserved sword of a very scarce pattern seldom seen complete with its scabbard & rarer still when scabbard still servicable
