Victorian Era NZ Police HANDCUFFS come-along type

These come-along handcuffs were discontinued in the mid-1890's but until then were useful in controlling any prisoner with attitude problems, as they can cause a very painful response if only slightly twisted by the arresting officer
The Hiatt made locking-type of handcuffs (SEEN in the reference images) were also used back in Victorian times, but were very cumbersome to use.
They were secured (locked) using a hand-turned worm-thread key locking system that took time and co-operation of arrestee to apply, though were very secure when finally closed down and locked on both sides.
These come-along cuffs were fast and simple to apply, providing adequate security for most arrests.
Once CONVICTED ? Then most prisoners would have been secured by the screw-down locking cuffs & leg irons
That primitive key-lock type of handcuff (pictured here beside this "come-along" type) was still in use here in New Zealand until 1956...... over half a century after these come-along cuffs were discontinued
"HIATT" maker marked by one of the most highly reguarded Police contract manufacturers
Still in perfect working order and should make an interesting addition to any Police manacle or restraint collection
Retains the "click-locking release" that has often been deliberately removed by owner/operator back in the day when these were used
(As the lockingcatch can hurt the Constable's palm when severely twisting the come-along cuffs to control prisoner)
RARE items seldom seen for sale
