Gunmetal BRASS Boxlock .50 Cal = a "MAN-STOPPER"

A nice Gentleman's BOXLOCK Percussion pocket pistol with engraved lock & trigger guard

ANTIQUE Circa 1830-1860 & probably of European manufacture Still entirely TIGHT no nasty shakes, rattles, or loose bits

Shows a VERY STYLISH owner-initial, or maker ? "D" inlaid into the SAFETY CATCH

HANDLE bears extensive NOTCHING ?

With no-less than TWELVE on 1 side, & THREE on other !!!

Could the notch-carver have been a former owner ? One who had KEPT A TALLY of his victims ("kills" ?) or were they applied to increase grip traction ? (But never completed on one side)

It has a handsome HEXOGONAL barrel in very desirable "Gunmetal"

Gunmetal, also known as "Red Brass" in the USA, is a type of Bronze – an alloy of Copper (88%),Tin (10%), & Zinc (2%).

Originally used chiefly for making guns, gunmetal was eventually superseded by steel. Gunmetal casts & machines well & is resistant to corrosion

Boxlock pistols were pocket pistols popular in the late 1700’s & early 1800’s

The most unique feature of their design was the boxlock mechanism

Unlike most firearms which have the hammer located off to the side of the pistol, a boxlock pistol had a hammer located directly ON TOP of the pistol

Called a boxlock because all of the working mechanisms for the hammer & the trigger was located in a “box” or receiver directly below the top mounted hammer

While the hammer obstructed the aim of the user, this system had the advantage of making the gun more compact & concealable than other pistols
