Listing #: 231777665
The Ouchi Dolls carved from wood, are one of the local toys made in Yamaguchi Prefecture in the Western part of Japan. The dolls boast a history of over 600 years.

According to the chronicles, Lord Hiroyo Ouchi (1280-1352) had a beautiful wife. But she missed her parents' home and stayed indoors all day long, so the Lord decorated for her a big room filled with many dolls.

This room, later called Doll's Palace, became famous all over the country and many doll-makers came to Yamaguchi Prefecture and began to make the so-called Ouchi Dolls by imitating the Palace's Dolls.

This is orgin of the Ouchi Dolls and the skill of making them has been handed down until today as the symbol of harmony between husband and wife of a peaceful home.

These little charmers have been in my family since the early 60's when they presented to us by a visitor from Japan.

They are about 5 cms wide and 5 wide. The little base 12 cms long and just over 5 cms wide.

They are in good condition, although the original box is a little damaged. (down the back on one of the seams)
