Description
Extremely Rare George VI Coronation rug measures 4.8 meters length 3.5 width. the rug was made for George VI (6th) coronation.
The rug has been in our family for many many years last 15 in storage. Its much to large for an average home. My late husband purchased it from a historical home in Dunedin that had owned it since the 1960's. It was sold as part of a deceased estate.
London’s Westminster Abbey, George VI and his consort, Lady Elizabeth, are crowned king and queen of the United Kingdom as part of a coronation ceremony that dates back more than a millennium. the Coronation took place in May 1937 he ascended to the throne after his elder brother, King Edward VIII, abdicated on December 11, 1936. The rug is stunning, although as you will well imagine it has wear in some parts and staining although it doesnt detract from its age beauty and incredible history. The photos show the wear and some stains. The colours are still vibrant and tell such a wonderful story. The back shows hand stitching and hand knotting. I am reluctant to sell, however would love it to be appreciated and admired for what it is. Te Papa has one in their museum which is much smaller and quite different in design although similar colours. Because of the size I cannot give correct cost of shipping its heavy and massive. The buyer would either need to pick up or arrange shipping.
