ST HELEN'S (Westport Dist) A Class datesamps RARE!

Pair of 1935 Silver Jubilee 6d Orange stamps (catalogued at $60 each used) which have beautiful impressions of the rare (rated 7 by Wooders) St Helen's A Class datestamp with the apostrophe before the S.

Interestingly Wooders records this datestamp in use only until 1925 but these are clearly datestamped 20 June 1935.

A great piece of postal history.


BACKGROUND INFO ON ST HELEN'S.

St. Helen's was one mile from Seddonville, and the same distance from Mokihinui, near the mouth of the river of that name. It was twenty-eight miles distant from Westport, and formed part of the Karamea riding of the county of Buller, in the electoral district of Motueka, and the provincial district of Nelson. The population of St. Helen's was not separately recorded at the census of 1901, but was evidently included in the 331 persons returned as residents in Mokihinui Valley, in which it lay. Besides its flag railway station, St. Helen's had a hotel and a store where the business of the post office was located. The surrounding country is largely covered with bush. St. Helen's was on the south side of the Mokihinui river.

The St. Helen's Post Office and Telephone Bureau were operated in the store of Mr. Timothy Corby. Mr. Corby's store was established in the year 1889, and was well stocked with grocery, drapery and boots. There was also a butchery business in connection with the establishment.
