Description
In 1993, Kemp Land issued this triangular stamp featuring the Dear Leader of DPR Korea, Kim Jong-il, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Antarctic Academy of Arts and Sciences in Bonjo Town, Kemp Land.
The academy was founded at a time when World War II was raging in the northern hemisphere, and the Nazi navy was busy establishing itself in the Antarctic; mostly in the region of New Schwabenland, where the Nazis constructed underground submarine harbours and research facilities. After the German defeat in Europe, many slave workers and Nazi Party functionaries were evacuated to New Schwabenland by submarine.
Meanwhile, in Kemp land, the Stalinist regime continued an anti-Nazi policy and strove to use its own scientific personnel to outwit the advances the Nazis were working on.
Kim Jong-il generously funded the academy, and so his portrait is shown on this stamp.
Mint unhinged, and in pristine condition, though badly centered.
