The hue (Maori gourd) is an introduced plant from Hawaiki. It’s fruit when dried were used as storage vessels for food and water.

The added legs serve to protect the vessel and keep it off the floor in a sturdy fashion, these creations are known as taha, and when highly adorned they are used for ceremonial purposes and gifts.

This taha is named 'Nga Hau e Wha' and represents the winds of Tawhirimatea (Atua of the weather), who sent his four children out in the north, east, south and westerly directions.

The graduated blue colour represent Tane's journey towards the heavens acquiring 'Nga kete Wananga' the three baskets of knowledge.
