4. Katrina Edwards: Aviotearoa

In her work Aviotearoa, Katrina has reinterpreted the idea of the traditional Christmas wreath by focusing on the New Zealand Christmas experience of summer and nature. Using a dry felting technique she has created exquisite models of individual native birds which she has attached to a wreath that she has felted to make it look like a tree branch, or the mixed landscape of a forest.

Katrina has made likenesses of a Kakapo, a Blue teal duck, a Morepork and Fantail, an Oyster catcher, a Tui and Wood Pigeon, a Kokako, a Bellbird and Pukeko and Dotterel, as well as a Saddleback and Kingfisher.

The Project:
Parnell celebrates Christmas with 20 artists reinterpreting the wreath, with works on exhibit in 20 Parnell stores and galleries from November 19 - December 19. In the spirit of Christmas, most works are for sale by TradeMe auction during this period, with twenty percent of proceeds to be donated to the NZ Gynaecological Cancer Foundation.

20% will go to: The New Zealand Gynaecological Cancer Foundation's mission is to educate and inform all NZ women about the signs and symptoms of gynaecological cancers (the 4 main ones are: uterine, ovarian, cervical and vaginal/vulval cancer), to encourage early detection and to provide support for women following diagnosis and treatment.
