6. Leanne Joy Lupelele Clayton: Maunia Lava le Kilisimasi
Dimensions & materials:
450 mm in diameter, mixed media (2010
Leannes work is titled Maunia Lava le Kilisimasi; this translates to mean Cheers, have a good Christmas. She has reinterpreted the traditional Christmas wreath by using her own aesthetic flair and by packing the work full of her own familial, cultural and spiritual meaning.
For instance, the Fale (home) has been referenced as it represents love of Aiga (family) and all those who enter within the home. The palm tree represents the hard work of Leannes family in keeping their gardens clean in the lead up to Christmas, and how the palm tree thus became symbolic for her family of the end of the year and preparing for the New Year. The vaka represents the journey of Leannes grandparents from Samoa to New Zealand in search of a better life and education for their children. The kava bowl is the representation of coming together, of feasting and renewing relationships and enjoying home cooked food shared between Aiga and friends.
