14. Amanda A'Hara: Dia de los Muertos

Materials: Handpainted cotton, ribbon, wire and mixed media (2010)

Amanda's recent work has focused on embroidery, screenprinting and handpainting, and she has employed some of these techniques to create her wreath "Dia de los Muertos", inspired by the imagery from the Mexican holiday of Dia de Los Muertos or the Day of the Dead.

The Project:
Parnell celebrates Christmas with 20 artists reinterpreting the wreath, with works on exhibit in 20 Parnell stores and galleries from November 19 - December 19. In the spirit of Christmas, most works are for sale by TradeMe auction during this period, with twenty percent of proceeds to be donated to the NZ Gynaecological Cancer Foundation.

Established in May 2007, The New Zealand Gynaecological Cancer Foundation's mission is to educate and inform all NZ women about the signs and symptoms of gynaecological cancers, to encourage early detection and to provide support for women following diagnosis and treatment.

The Foundations primary focus for 2010/11 is raising awareness of the symptoms of the four main forms of gynaecological cancer - uterine, ovarian, cervical and vaginal/vulval cancer. This is for the simple goal of getting women to a specialist, sooner. Early detection can save lives.

As the Foundation matures, they also wish to provide research grants for vital research into the causes and treatment of gynaecological cancers.
