Vibrant colors with content that bridges eccentricity, and cultural significance. By a respected New Zealand artist, the late Alan Taylor (1933-2016).

This work focuses on the story of Maori, prophets Te Whiti-o-Rongomai “The Pacifist of Parihaka”, and relative Tohu Kakahi.

Te Whiti carried a spiritual authority from an early age, and has become an important figure in the history of both New Zealand, and Pacifism.

After his participation in the Taranaki wars, by the mid 1860’s Te Whiti had decided to pursue peaceful resistance to European incursion - together with Tohu leading Maori to ploughing of land occupied by settlers in land where the government consistently disregarded promised Maori reserves.

Despite his (and others) many arrests, "protest continued to grow. Parihaka became a symbol for many Maori”.

The work also includes references to “the white albatross feather, which Te Whiti’s followers adopted as a symbol protecting the mana of the Parihaka settlement, [and] remains an enduring emblem among Te Ati Awa.” Tohu's marae was known as “Toroanui”, or great albatross.

“Some descendants believe Tohu and the people of Parihaka saw an albatross descending onto the village… Others believe the vision was celestial – a trail of light from a comet” also included in the work.

This listing excludes many details of the life, struggles and triumphs of Te Whiti & Tohu, but much can be found online.

"Alan's artistic career spans 40 years. The inspiration for his art is not so much taken from a literal view of experience but also a powerful surreal, subconscious response to Maori landscape, history and tradition."

"An expressionist painter, Alan's achievement is to have established a language that is unique to his work and which crosses cultural boundaries; the imagery and symbolism of Maori generations... incorporating potent iconography that is the artist's own."
