Listing #: 644166783
Selling as a pair of signed oil paintings by George Turner. Hung in the Midland Club in Oxford Terrace in Christchurch, since its opening by the Duke of Gloucester in 1935, until it closed in the 1990's.

The Midland Club was the successor to the earlier Federal Club. It is fair to assume that the framed pair of paintings hung (in this frame) in the Federal Club since the 1890's.

Both paintings are in oils, behind glass, and in excellent condition. I have kept them in the original frame for their protection.

They are rare and original paintings of early Christchurch views, with historical significance.

Each deserves its own new frame and overlay. That would enhance their individual values.

One is titled 'Dr.Barker's House' Opposite Club 1885. The club referred to is the old Federal Club in Worcester St in the block west of, and touching Cathedral Square. The view is from the Square looking towards the Worcester St bridge which can be seen in the mid distance.

The other is of 'Addington Station July 1879'. The station is covered in snow.

The oak frame is 660mm x 250mm
Each painting is 250mm x 170mm

TURNER, George N. ~1833-1911
Served in the Turkish Contingent during the Crimean War.
Arrived in Lyttelton in the Cossipwe 1855. 1858 was clerk in the
Provincial Secretary's office, in 1861 was also Registrar of Sheep
Brands, 1870 Chief Clerk in Public Works Department. Designed
the Arms of the Canterbury Agricultural Assoc and in his later
years sold paintings as a sideline though he was said to have made
his living at Lyttelton at first by his painting. The subjects for
much of his work were taken from Dr Barker's photographs of
Lyttelton in its earliest years. Once described as having had "a
happy-go-lucky career". Was almost certainly the G. Turner who
exhibited with CSA 1881-87; OAS 1896-1906, and as an Otago artist
exhibited in the NZ International Ex Chch 1906-07,

Work reproduced in John Oakley's Painting in Canterbury. Represented: Cantcrbury
