Early Aston Greathead Oil on Board Seascape C 1967

The following auction is for a superb oil on board by the late, great Aston Greathead. The painting features a coastal view of the Kaikoura Peninsula and has been dated 1967 in the artist's hand. Greathead was one of New Zealand's best landscape artists up until his passing in 2012. He won the Dawson Hallmark watercolor award sponsored by Sir Henry Kelliher. It was by winning the Dawson Hallmark that he was catapulted into the New Zealand art world as an artist of great skill and ability. Greathead was also a former soldier having fought in both North Africa and Italy during WWII.

The following painting is an excellent example of Greathead's work reflecting his ability to paint great works of art in a reasonably short period of time. It is a testament to his skill with the brush that he was able to paint many of his paintings in a matter of hours. The date of the painting, a mere year after winning the Dawson Hallmark, would make the following work a very early commercial painting in a medium, oil acrylic, that was not typical to his early paintings. His paintings are definitely of an investment grade and have a rightful place alongside any of New Zealand's great contemporary artists.
