Description
This auction is for a stunning original (circa 1920) water colour painting by ‘W Sands’ (1894-1980) of Porthoustock, on the east coast of the Lizard Peninsula, in Cornwall.
The artist, Thomas Henry Victor, commonly used the pseudonym ’W. Sands’ to overcome a contractual agreement to the Morrab Gallery. Although offered scholarships to The Slade he lived all his life in Cornwall. He was a renowned west country artist who painted mainly busy harbour and street scenes. He was born on 6 September 1894 in Penzance, Cornwall and later owned a shop in Mousehole. He died on 10 March 1980.
Superbly framed under glass, with multiple hand applied wash lines, by highly regarded John Leech Gallery of Auckland.
Excellent condition.
Signed by the artist.
Note: On the obverse side there appears in a separate enclosed feature panel an old descriptive note of provenance hand written in fountain pen.
Dimensions (approx.): Frame: 54 W x 42.5 H cm Painting: 29 W x 16.6 H cm
