Background info about the Artist - Josephine Davis is a descendant of one of our foremost 19th Century artists Kennett Watkins. Josephine's mother, Lois Davis, (nee Watkins) is also an artist, who obtained a Diploma of Fine Art in Christchurch in 1945.

Josephine's interest in art was established by her mother at an early age. Although offered a position at Elam in 1977, she opted instead to accept an opening with a Hamilton dealer gallery. She pursued a full time career in the Fine Art business until early 1989. During this time she kept up painting in her spare time and exhibited regularly with local societies and dealer galleries.

In 1983 Josephine was awarded the Montana Art Award for Watercolour.

In 1989 Josephine travelled and painted in Europe. Initially undertaking studies at Blake College, London and then moving to Paris, where she was based for several months. In September 1989, Josephine attended the Royal Watercolour Society's Summer School where her tutors included the President and Vice President of the Society.

Since returning to New Zealand the artist has pursued her vocation in painting on a full time basis and in 1990 won the prestigious Tauranga Art Award with her watercolour of the tall ships Anna Christina and Anna Rosa in Tauranga Harbour.

In 1991 the Gisborne Art Gallery purchased a watercolour by Josephine for their collection.

As well as exhibiting at Jonathan Grant Galleries, Josephine displays her paintings in galleries in Paris and London, where she is rapidly achieving the recognition she deserves
