Description

Lovely Doris Lusk landscape in watercolour. Well framed in simple flat dark timber frame, no sun exposure crisp and clear in earthy colours. Understood to be painted early 1990 on last visit to Queenstown.

Dimensions, 525mm x 420mm

Lusk studied at the Dunedin School of Art. Her earlier paintings reflect her fascination with industrial themes and evolving landscapes. Lusk constant companion was her sketch book when travelling, and often in the company of friends, Anne Hamblett, Colin McCahon and Rodney Kennedy. Living in Christchurch she was acquainted with the Caxton Press literary circle and was one of ‘the Group’ which included artists Bensemann, McCahon, Angus, Curnows, Baxter, and Brasch. Many of her earlier works reflect the quiet isolation of Brasch and Curnow poetry and are deeply personal. As a potter from the 40s -70s she taught pottery at Risingholme. Mid 60s was tutor at University of Canterbury Fine Art with students such as Tony Fomison, Philip Trustum, Neil Frazer and many more prominent New Zealand Painters. Lusk won the Hays Art Award and the National Bank art award for watercolour, and during the 80s Lusk was the president of the CSA Gallery. After her trip to Italy in the 70s she painted an intimate series of watercolours of the awnings in St Marks Sq in Venice, these toured New Zealand extensively and was purchased as the set by the Auckland City Art Gallery. Lusk was particularly interested in, and moved by the evolving landscape and produced paintings that strongly reflect this over the next few decades, Onekaka, Demolition, Benmore, Imagined Projects, Tent Series, and Breakwater. Her mediums were wide, watercolour, charcoal, pencil, ink, collage, oil, acrylic, and pottery. Doris Lusk passed away in April 1990 and was posthumously granted the Governor General Art Award later that year.

Doris Lusk is considered to be one of Canterbury’s finest landscape painters, and as this watercolour has never been offered for sale it would be a lovely addition to any collection.
