Yogi Boyz,Rocks Palace,Stormies, , Sa Warriors,, The E.Ts, Ngati Otara (NUTTY OTARA), Otamariki Freaky, Now thats done this is, well all my art is,like anyones im sure, steeped in their childhood to some extent.I do Maori art(like thIs),most disagree saying its far from it.Well, if i was,say Maori, growing up in NZs Pacifica capital Otara, immersed in the arts and culture,.If its not cultural"what is it? This is what i think,, Growing up in Otara my earliest memory of art is and i still,try and match today is of a graffiti style Bob Marley painting with a ghetto blaster over shoulder and those 80s mirror sunnies on{it was really bad},painted on a big wall in the Otara Town Centre with 5 other paintings all side by side(where Fresh Gallery is now). They were much better than the Bob Marley painting,so why cant i remember them,and only the worst one?Well,I think its not about good or bad,its about effect and affect,a way to look at it is if you hear a bad song, you never forget it,(like Ultravox, Vienna)and chances are you will cherish it in later years,just like the good songs,thats art!,once you see it, you cant unsee it! I was inspired to do this piece whilst waiting in a dairy,in Otara, to be served. A huge Island guy in front of me had a pile of coins on the counter counting and in his island accent said to the Indian owner what sounded to me like,"Two for da Pig Pen Pie",in which the Indian gave him two from the pie warmer. Art hits you in some weird ways sometimes, man! This Cultural art piece is exactly 274mm bigger than say a Big Ben Pie sign outside a shop. This Sheriff (unlike on a Big Ben sign)is puffing on a cancer stick, this piece of cultural art weighs in at nearly 12 kilograms, has 20mm smashproof plexi on the front, with 4mm red hot plexi behind it, Steel hpl bonded onto the back with an industrial pattern,,this piece is floating 4cm off the backing and 4 big dirty coach bolts hold this piece together.
