Artwork Information: This painting highlights the most noble aspects of man. As Shakespeare says in Hamlet: What a piece of work is a man! How noble in reason, how infinite in faculty! In form and moving how express and admirable! In action how like an Angel! in apprehension how like a god! The paintings title – Icarus, is taken from the Greek story of the son of Daedalus who flew too close to the sun, melting the wax that held his wings together, and who consequently drowned in the sea. This legend is a cautionary tale about the greatness of man, as well as the folly of excess pride.
