Ion Brown Oil on Canvas Still-Life *White Camellias

A lovely still-life by another well respected New Zealand artist, Ion Brown. The following picture is dated 1989, an earlier, still-life depiction titled 'White Camellias.' It is quite interesting to compare early works by the artist with his current Impressionist oeuvre. Still-life painting was very much a mainstay of the Dutch and Flemish schools in the 16th & 17th centuries and has since fallen out of fashion to an extent. While Impressionism has always been quite favorable in contemporary New Zealand art history I would advise against looking over still-life pictures which have at some point featured in the oeuvres of many successful New Zealand artists such as Frances Hodgkins (not terribly traditional in the case of Hodgkins but still present!!), Nugent Welch, Michael Blow, Roy Sefton and of course, the late Peter Brown whose classes Ion Brown attended.
