"Mon" a generic Japanese word for gate, is either used alone or as a suffix in reference to the many gates of a buddhist or shinto shrine. This gate- "Chu" (meaning "middle") "Mon" thus "Chumon" is the middle gate to the great Todai-Ji temple complex at Nara in Japan
