About this title- Written in staccato sentences consisting only of subjects and verbs, this book chronicles the coming and passing of a midsummer's storm across a city. The brief text is basically a series of observations--"Sun shines. Children tug. Skies darken."--as a bright afternoon suddenly darkens with the advent of a thunderstorm, interrupting picnickers in a park and sending shoppers scurrying for shelter. Just as suddenly, the storm abates, activities are happily resumed, and "Rainbow glows." Dennis layers vivid strokes of pastel over watercolor to create an impressionistic scene that works well with the text. The illustrations capture the feeling of the approaching storm and its increasing intensity. As the rain passes over, the colors again brighten and the images sharpen. Stylistically similar to the team's Night Fire! (Scholastic, 1989), the subject here is less frightening and more focused than the previous book. Unfortunately, increased realism and architectural detail in these pictures make a weakness in Dennis' figure-drawing ability more noticeable. Still, her appealing and successful use of color to establish mood remains strong. The brief "noun-verb/noun-verb" text can be handled by fledgling readers or shared with preschool storytime audiences.
