About The Author

Robert Michael Ballantyne is a nephew of the publishers who brought Sir Walter Scott's literature to the world. Born in Edinburgh on April 24, 1825, Ballantyne entered publishing when he was twenty-seven years old. He was a partner at the Thomas Constable publishing firm and then began writing children's stories. Coral Island, published in 1858, ultimately became the pinnacle of his career. He lived in countries throughout Europe and passed away in Rome on February 8, 1894.
