Terence was inspired to write about life in the rubber plantations of Sumatra after being Guest Speaker at a Probus Club meeting, where he talked about his 40 year career as a rubber planter in the East Indies and Malaya. Very little has been written about what is now a bygone era, and he was inundated by questions from members of English, Dutch, French and Belgian backgrounds, who had historical family links with the Sumatran plantation industry but had absolutely no knowledge of the way of life or the hardships experienced by their forbearers. The very words 'Colonial Planter' evoke a strong image of a breed of men living in the lap of luxury in a tropical paradise. This popular mythology was largely the creation of writers like Somerset Maugham and Pierre Boulle, who made no mention of the long hours of gruelling hard work, the pain of cultural dislocation and loneliness, the constant threat of disease and the danger of losing one's job if there was a slump in the price of rubber. Other more recent authors, such as Di Morressy have been more considerate but, for the story's sake, life on a plantation has inevitably been romanticised.
Terence has attempted to paint a more honest picture of the operations on a rubber estate, and the dedication, resilience, strength of character and sense of humour required to deal with the problems they faced on a daily basis.Terence Campbell is a Fellow of the British Institute of Management, U.K. and Lif Please click here to ask a question
