Joseph Smith Fletcher (1863-1935), was a Yorkshire-born journalist, poet and novelist, who specialised in crime stories.
In the opening chapter of David March, Mr. J. S. Fletcher promises his readers a good story—one to make middle-aged people feel young again and young folk thrill to the call of adventure and romance—and he faithfully carries out his promise from beginning to end. It is a very pretty tale of a blacksmith's poor apprentice of mysterious and noble birth, who falls in love with the rich man's daughter and journeys to London to seek his fortune. On his travels he falls in with Christopher Wren, who sees genius in the workmanship of the few trinkets David has made in his spare time and becomes the young man's good friend and patron. There are other great folk in the book besides Sir Christopher. We have a glimpse of Charles II, in arrogant mood, and of Judge Jeffries, brutal, but with a touch of dignity. David goes into Buckinghamshire to make a screen of wrought iron for the private chapel of the Countess of Alchester, and while he is beneath this noble lady's roof he learns that her chaplain, old Father Latournelle, knows the secret of his birth-- Review in The Tablet
