"Being a woman is a terribly difficult trade since it consists principally of dealings with men..."

Chance, first published in 1913, was Conrad's first novel to address directly the subject of feminism. It also marked the turning point in his fortunes as a writer; he became, in effect, a best selling novelist as well as a critical success. Conrad himself described Chance as 'the biggest piece of work I've done since Lord Jim'.

In its story of the doomed love between Flora, daughter of the disgraced financier de Barral, and Captain Anthony the sailor, Chance at first sight returns to a familiar theme of Conrad's, that of emotional isolation.
But in the sardonic (and, it has to be said, frequently misogynistic) narration of the story by Marlow, encountered before in Heart of Darkness and Lord Jim, we find many of Conrad's most penetrating observations on women and their role in society.

Chance has fallen from grace somewhat in recent years... and this new edition provides an opportunity for reassessment.

Joseph Conrad was born in Poland in 1857. He did not learn English until he was 20, yet he was to become one of the greatest of English novelists.
