Chaucer's great masterpiece and one of the most celebrated works of world literature, were begun in 1387.

Chaucer tells of a group of pilgrims who meet in the Tabard Inn in Southwark, London, where their host Harry Bailly, a real person, suggests that the trip to Canterbury might be made more pleasant if each pilgrim tell four stories; two on the way to Canterbury and two on the way back. He offers to accompany them and to award the author of the best tale a free supper.

Their collected stories, connected by exchanges between the pilgrims plus prologues and epilgues, make up the Canterbury Tales. The 'authors' of the tales come from every layer of English society - from squire to ploughman, and nearly all of them are the object of Chaucer's satire. Many characters such as the too clever lawyer, the miller who cheats his clients and the churchman too keen on worldly goods would be familiar in twentieth-century society.

The Tales are based on stories common to fourteenth century Europe but Chaucer's art has transformed these tales into poetic artistry which is enjoyable at any level. The Miller's Tale and the Reeve's Tale have been called the funniest in the English language while The Wife of Bath's Tale provides both mystery and charm.

This edition, 'translated' by J.U. Nicolson is illustrated with eight colour plates by M. L. Kirk.
